Problemizer Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 9, 2026

1. Who We Are

Develemit LLC, doing business as Problemizer (“Problemizer,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), runs problemizer.app: free K–8 math, reading and typing practice tools and games. Problemizer works fully without an account; parents may optionally create one to sync progress across devices. This policy explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and how a parent can see, export, or delete it.

2. Scope

This policy covers problemizer.app, its practice tools and games, and the optional parent account. The account holder is always an adult — a parent or guardian. They are the only person who signs up and the only person who can authenticate. A student is a profile, not an account. A child never has credentials, never logs in, and is never the entity we collect consent from — the parent acts on the student’s behalf for every privacy-relevant action.

3. Data We Collect and Why

Using Problemizer without an account

An account is entirely optional. Every practice tool, worksheet generator, quiz and game works fully offline with progress stored only in your browser’s local storage — nothing about a child’s play is sent to our servers unless a parent creates an account.

What we collect if you create an account

DataWhoseWhy
Email addressParentLogin, password reset, service email
Password (hashed, never plain text)ParentLogin
Session cookie (a random token, no tracking)ParentKeep the parent signed in
Plan status and subscription ID (Problemizer Plus subscribers only)ParentKnow which plan the account is on
Display nameStudentDistinguish profiles in the parent’s dashboard
Grade band (k-2 | 3-5 | 6-8)StudentPick correct tool difficulty
Practice history: scores, streaks, fact mastery, session times and lengthsStudentShow progress over time, resume across devices
Game saves for Gadget Garage, Math Quest and Typing Quest (progress, items, levels)StudentResume a game on another device
Typing Quest counts of words and characters typed, speed and accuracyStudentGame progress. We never store the text typed
Practice goals and assignments (a tool, a day, minutes)StudentParent-set targets
Word lists (words, optional example sentences) and reading-log entries (title, minutes, optional notes)StudentSpelling and reading practice, typed by the family
Server request logs: IP address, time, page requested, browser typeAnyoneRun and secure the service; kept only as long as needed for that
Crash reports: scrubbed error details, release, coarse browser family (see "Crash reports" below)AnyoneFind and fix bugs

That is the complete list. Game saves and practice history travel together as one progress record per student. A display name is not a real name — use a nickname, first initial, or made-up name if you prefer. We have no way to tell the difference, and we don’t ask you to prove one.

Word lists and reading-log notes are free text. A parent or child chooses what goes in them. Please keep full names, addresses and other personal details out. We don’t read or analyze them; we only show them back to your family.

Stays on the device, never sent to us: the parent PIN that locks kid mode (kept only as a salted hash in the browser), display preferences, and everything above when no account exists. Sharing a Math Quest hero uses a small hero card (class, level, look and equipment picked from fixed lists — no typed name) that moves between devices without passing through an account.

What we never collect

We do not have a field for, and will reject at the API layer if anything ever tries to submit: a student’s birthdate or age, school name, email address, or photo/avatar/biometric data. We also never collect precise location, contacts, or microphone or camera input. There is no chat, messaging, public profile or leaderboard, so a child cannot post or reveal personal information to anyone. This is enforced in code, not just in this policy.

Crash reports

When the app crashes, we receive a report so we can fix the bug. It is built to carry no information about who you are.

What is sent: the error message and stack trace with anything that looks like an email address or an ID removed, the page’s route with IDs replaced by placeholders (for example /students/:id, never the real address), the kind of error, the app version (release), and a coarse browser family such as “Safari on iOS”. For errors on our server, we send the route, request method, status code and the same scrubbed error text and release.

What is never sent: no account or student identifier, no email, no display name, no practice history or game save, no request or page content, no query strings, no cookies, and no analytics of any kind. Nothing is stored in your browser for this, and your browser never contacts anyone but us: reports go to our own server, which forwards them.

IP address: our server does not forward your IP address. The processor sees only our server’s address, and it records a country from that address, which is where our server is, not where your family is. We use the IP address we see only to limit how many reports one device can send.

Who processes it: emit-vision, an error-reporting service operated by Develemit LLC, the same operator as Problemizer. It keeps these reports for 90 days.

4. How We Use Data

Only to run Problemizer for your family:

  • sign a parent in and keep the session secure;
  • show progress and resume practice and games across devices;
  • send account email (verification, password reset, notices about the account or these policies) — never marketing;
  • manage a Problemizer Plus subscription for parents who choose one;
  • keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and fix bugs.

We do not sell personal data. We do not use it for advertising, profiling, or training models, and we do not combine it with data from anywhere else. We may disclose information if the law requires it.

5. Children’s Data (COPPA)

Problemizer is directed at children under 13, which puts it inside the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The parent is the only authenticating principal and the only person we collect verified consent from. A child never creates credentials, so a child can never independently consent to data collection — every student profile is created by a signed-in parent acting on their own account.

Consent mechanism: a parent creates the account and verifies their email address by clicking a link we send; that verification confirms the consenting party is an adult account holder. By creating a student profile the parent consents to the collection described here for that child. We do not use a third-party age-verification or consent vendor. We also minimize what a student record can hold, on purpose: section 3 is the whole list.

We do not disclose children’s personal information to anyone except the service providers in section 10, who process it only to run Problemizer for us.

A parent’s rights over a child’s information

A parent can at any time:

  • Review everything we hold about their child: from Settings, export the full practice history and game saves for any student as JSON, or export the account.
  • Delete a single student profile, or the entire account and every student under it, from Settings.
  • Refuse further collection by deleting the profile or account, or simply by not creating one — the app keeps working offline with no data sent to us. We never require a child to share more than is reasonably necessary to use a feature.

Review and deletion are self-service. For anything Settings doesn’t cover, email privacy@problemizer.app from the address on the account. We read that mailbox regularly and aim to answer within 10 business days, and always within 30 days.

6. Data Retention

  • Parent account and student profiles: kept while the account exists. Accounts with no sign-in for 24 months are deleted, with a reminder email at 22 months first.
  • Deletion on request: deleting a student profile or the account in Settings removes the data from the live database immediately — deletion actually removes it, not just hides it. Nightly backups (the last 7) may hold deleted data for up to 7 days until they rotate out; we never restore from a backup except for disaster recovery.
  • Email-verification and password-reset tokens: expire and are purged within 24 hours.
  • Session cookie: expires after 30 days, or when the parent signs out.
  • Billing status and subscription ID: deleted with the parent account. Stripe, as payment processor, keeps its own transaction records as its legal obligations require.
  • Server request logs: rotated out automatically, typically within days.
  • Crash reports: 90 days.

7. Your Rights (CCPA / California Residents)

California residents (and, as a matter of our own practice, every parent) have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use and disclose — this policy, plus the Settings export, answers that;
  • Delete it — self-service in Settings, or by email;
  • Opt out of sale or sharing — there is nothing to opt out of: we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising;
  • Non-discrimination — exercising any of these rights never changes the service you get.

Email privacy@problemizer.app to make a request. We verify it by confirming it comes from the email address on the account, and respond within 45 days.

8. Cookies and Tracking

Problemizer sets one cookie: the sign-in session cookie, only after a parent signs in. It is needed for the service to work and is not used to track anyone. We run no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and the site loads no fonts, scripts or images from third-party servers. The offline service worker only caches our own pages in your browser. Crash reporting uses no cookies, no browser storage and no identifiers. That is why there is no cookie banner. Details, including how we use your browser’s local storage, are in our Cookie Policy.

9. Data Security

  • All traffic to problemizer.app is encrypted in transit with TLS.
  • Passwords are stored only as salted scrypt hashes; session tokens are random.
  • The database runs on our own server and is not exposed to the internet; access is limited to the operator.
  • Nightly database backups are stored in Cloudflare R2, which encrypts stored data at rest.

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify affected parents by email without unreasonable delay and as the law requires.

10. Subprocessors and Third Parties

ProviderPurposeLocation
Hetzner Online GmbHHosting: the server that runs Problemizer and its databaseGermany (Nuremberg)
Cloudflare, Inc.DNS; R2 object storage for nightly database backups (the last 7)United States / global
Stripe, Inc. (through emit-billing)Payments for Problemizer Plus subscribers onlyUnited States
develemail (operated by Develemit LLC)Account email only (verification, password reset); never marketingGermany (Hetzner, Nuremberg)
emit-vision (operated by Develemit LLC)Crash reports described in section 3; no child data and no identifiersGermany (Hetzner, Nuremberg)

develemail sees the parent’s email address and the message, and emails never include a student’s display name. Stripe receives card details directly; we never see or store them. We keep only the plan status and a subscription ID, and the only identifier sent to emit-billing, Develemit LLC’s billing service, is the parent’s user ID. No child data — no student name, grade band or progress — goes to Stripe or emit-billing. None of these is a data broker, an ad network or an analytics vendor. We do not sell data and we do not run ads.

11. Data Transfers

Problemizer’s servers, and the develemail, emit-vision and emit-billing services, are hosted in Germany (European Union). If you use Problemizer from the United States or elsewhere, your information is transferred to and stored in Germany. Cloudflare and Stripe may process data in the United States and other countries where they operate.

12. Changes to This Policy

If we make a material change, we will email parent account holders at least 30 days before it takes effect, update the effective date, and show a visible notice to signed-in parents rather than relying on them to re-read this page. If we ever change what we collect from children, we will ask the parent again before applying it to their child.
